Koufonisia lies sixteen nautical miles southeast of Naxos, the final inhabited outpost in a scattered chain the Greeks call the Small Cyclades. The archipelago—Donoussa, Schinoussa, Iraklia, and the twin islets of Ano and Kato Koufonisi—remained empty of year-round settlement until the nineteenth century, when sponge divers and goat herders built the first stone houses above the fishing anchorages. Ferry service from Naxos Port began in 1989, linking the islands to the regional hub twice weekly; by 2010 daily departures in summer had turned Koufonisia into a footnote on backpacker itineraries. The crossing takes ninety minutes aboard conventional ferries that depart Chora's commercial quay each morning, or three hours on slower car ferries that continue south to Amorgos. Faster alternatives emerged in the 2010s: sailing catamarans and rigid-hull inflatables that depart from Agia Anna, a beach hamlet on Naxos's southern coast, cutting the voyage to forty-five minutes and allowing time to anchor at Rina Cave—a collapsed sea grotto on Kato Koufonisi's southeastern tip, accessible only by water. These day cruises typically include a Greek barbecue cooked on deck, snorkelling stops in the turquoise shallows between islets, and two hours ashore in Ano Koufonisi's single village, where nineteen permanent residents operate seasonal tavernas and rent rooms above the fishing harbour. The geology is pure limestone: the name Koufonisia derives from kófos, hollow, a reference to the network of sea caves and collapsed chambers that riddle the coastline. Centuries of wave action have carved natural bridges, swim-through tunnels, and arched windows in the cliffs. The islands produce no fresh water; cisterns collect winter rain, and summer supplies arrive by tanker barge. Vegetation is sparse—wild thyme, prickly pear, and low maquis scrub—leaving the bone-white rock exposed under a sky that holds its blue intensity from April through October. A boat trip Naxos to Koufonisia remains the only practical way to reach the archipelago. No airport exists, and the ferry schedule contracts sharply after September. The morning departure window, between nine and noon, avoids the afternoon meltemi winds that can make the return crossing uncomfortable in exposed waters.
